Log Wall Styles

"Choose from the largest choice of log styles, shapes & sizes in the country.

- CEDAR or PINE -

The right log for the right price will make your dream log home a reality!"

(the picture above is our jumbo 13" log made from cedar... largest milled cedar log made!)

"When you choose Sierra to make your log home, you will be choosing from the largest line up of milled & handcrafted log styles in the country. You can have the exact log that fits the look, style and budget that your dream log home requires... bottom line, you can have what you want!"

Milled Log Styles (our specialty) - our milled log is precisely shaped by a very large log shaping machine to the profile of your choice (picture on the right is the production machine & process)... profiled logs are precise and easy to build with.

We manufacture 3 styles of log shapes:
Swedish Cope Log, "D" Log and our Tuscan Timber Log.

All of our milled logs can be produced in CEDAR or PINE

SWEDISH COPE MILLED LOG
-- this traditional log style is round on both sides with a concave groove on the bottom so it can seat on the log below it. This log can also be made with a T&G top and bottom.
(picture is standing dead lodgepole pine/spruce)
  • size - 8", 9" 10", 12", jumbo 13"
  • lengths - standard is 8'-20' with lengths up to 48'
  • surface - smooth or hand peeled
  • moisture content - pine (below 20%) is from standing dead trees, cedar (approx 25%) is air dried
  • structural grade - TP "wall log 40 & btr" (walls), TP "premium" (beams)
  • notch - pre-cut saddle notch
  • log cut - random length, or pre-cut using the "sierra smart cut" method
  • gasket - 2" x 3/8" thick used in-between logs to keep weather out
  • log attachment - 1/2"x lags and/or self tapping fasteners (through bolting is used when engineer requires)
  • no butt joint option - logs can be made in full lengths so there are no exposed joints where logs come together
"D" MILLED LOG -- this popular log style is rounded on the outside and flat on the inside with a "v" groove look. This is a tongue & groove (single or double) style of log. We have created a new tongue design called "weatherblok" that pushes the tongue forward creating the best weather barrier possible (shown in the picture on the right). (*available from our east coast yard made from KD Eastern White Pine) (picture is air dried red cedar)
  • sizes - 4"x8"*, 6"x8"*, 6"x10"*, 7"x10", 8"x8"*, 8"x10"*, 10"x10"
  • lengths - standard 8'-16' with lengths up to 24'
  • surface - smooth or hand hewn

  • notch - pre-cut dovetail, pre-cut saddle notch, butt & pass
  • log cut - random length, or pre-cut using the "sierra smart cut" method
  • gasket - 5/8" x 1/4" thick used in-between logs to keep weather outlog
  • attachment - 1/2"x lags and/or self tapping fasteners (through bolting is used when engineer requires)
TUSCAN TIMBER MILLED LOG -- this is a flat on both sides log the looks like a timber. We make this log in (3) different profiles (shown in sequence on the right): chinking channel on both sides, chinking channel on 1 side, "v" groove on both sides. This is a tongue & groove (single or double) style of log. (*available from our east coast yard made from KD Eastern White Pine) (picture is standing dead lodgepole pine/spruce)

All of our handcrafted log homes can be crafted in FIR, PINE or CEDAR

NATURAL HANDCRAFTED LOG HOME -- Your Handcrafted log home is pre-built at our yard using natural hand peeled logs and saddle notch corners (picture on the right). These logs are always in full length (no butt joints) as a standard. Your log home is then dis-assembled and re-erected at your job site. We can craft your home using either method of crafting: "chinking style" or "full scribe style". (pictures are green lodgepole pine)
  • "chinking style" (our specialty) - the logs sit on top of each other without any formal joinery, they are lightly flattened (called buzz cutting)... the wall is then "chinked" on both sides to create the weather tight barrier. (both pictures on the right)
  • "full scribe style" - the logs are formally grooved (called scribing) on the bottom to accept the log below... the groove is then packed with insulation to create the weather barrier (we suggest chinking these homes also)
  • size - 9" to 12" tip (small end, the logs are natural with a taper)
  • lengths - full length up to 48'
  • moisture content - standing dead pine (below 20%)... fir, pine & cedar can also be made from green trees
  • structural grade - TP "wall log 40 & btr" (walls), TP "premium" (beams)
  • surface - hand peeled
  • notch - pre-cut saddle notch
  • log cut - pre-built at our yard
  • gasket - fiberglass insulation (full scribe style), none (chinking style)
  • log attachment - full length threaded rod & drift pins
